My weekly summary *ੈ✩‧₊˚

Week 1
I had my first media lesson. I am so excited!! Hope I can learn something new.

Week 2
This week, Mr. Nick teached us about genre, semiotics and tourism ads. It was my first time studying genre in depth, and it was also my first time hearing about semiotics.

Semiotics is the study of signs. There  are 4 types, camera, sound, mise-en-scene and I forgot the other one. I find it pretty difficult to differentiate these signs because there are a lot of them, but I'll try to watch the Youtube video about semiotics that Mr. Nick sent to the group and take notes about it.

Week 3
For our project, we've started on our statement of intent. We decided that Michelle will be in charge of our statement of intent for our tourism ad project. So far, we've already decided on our target audience and some other plans for our ad. We decided to target tourists that are young adults or adults, specifically those who are adventurous and love to experience new things at new places.

For my research, I'm almost done with my ad research. I'll continue my research during my free time.

Changes:
  • We changed our target audience into tourist-teenagers

Week 4
This week we learned about storyboards and how to make them. My group decided that the story board for our tourism ad will be my responsibility. I am pretty confident in my drawing skills so I had no problem being assigned to the job.

We also learned about different types of camera shots/movement as well as their function and effects. There are lots of camera shots/movements that I have to remember and I get some of them mixed up with each other sometimes. However, I believe that I will get used to them soon.

And lastly, we learned about the different types of sounds, diegetic and non-diegetic. Diegetic sounds are the sounds that the characters in the movie can hear, while non-diegetic sounds are sounds that only the audience can hear, not the characters. We also learned about melodic, discordant and contrapuntal sounds. Melodic sounds are sounds that fit well with the scene, e.g. an exciting scene is followed by an upbeat, exciting song. Discordant sounds is when a negative scene is followed with a negative soundtrack as well.  And lastly, contrapuntal sound is when the scene and the music does not match each other, e.g. a murder scene is followed with an exciting soundtrack. We also learned about the effects of these sounds to the audience.

Week 5
This week we had a lesson on editing and mise-en-scene, however I missed those lessons because I had to do "ANBK". I’d have to catch up by asking my group mates about what we learned.

We also had a mini quiz about camera shots, camera movement and sound on google forms. I wish I did better, but it’s okay because I still passed the quiz. I'll make sure to review more about camera shots and camera movement.

Lastly, we started making our filming schedule on google sheets and brainstormed some more while we’re at it. We decided to start filming on Sunday, 25th of August at the hotel Michelle’s staying at.

Changes:
  • We didn't end up filming at the hotel Michelle stayed at because she didn't have consent from her family to do so. Instead, we picked another date to film and changed our location as well. We settled on filming at the Double Six beach
  • I found out what mise-en-scene is. Mine-en-scene is basically everything included in a movie/series.  This includes props, costumes, sounds, etc.

Week 6
This week we had a lesson about new genre theories. Mr. Nick introduced us to two personnels, Steve Neale and David Buckingham. Steve Neale's theory is that the genre of a movie has to be similar enough, but also different enough to keep it entertaining to the audience. Meanwhile, David Buckingham's theory tells that genre has to keep up with society in order for it to be able to appeal to the audience. I feel like both theories are pretty easy to tell apart, so this week's lesson was pretty fun to me.

Additionally, Mr. Nick introduced us to CCR which is short for Creative Critical Reflection. He told us that it is crucial to finish for our tourism ad project because it is worth a lot of points. I started on my CCR presentation and I realized how much detail and effort I have to put into this presentation. It's going to be stressful, I hope I can finish everything on time.

Week 7
I wasn't at school on Thursday, so I missed a theory lesson. My classmates told me that we learned something new, which is narrative theory. Mr. Nick introduced us to one personnel and one term, which are Barthes and Levi Strauss.
  • Barthes: In order to get a good story, there has to be 5 codes, which are Hermeneutic codes, Proairetic codes, Semantic codes, Symbolic codes and Cultural codes.
  • Levi Strauss: His theory was called Binary Opposites which means that in order to get a good ending, it needs a conflict of two opposites.
I still don't fully understand what these two mean yet, but I plan to learn more about it through videos on Youtube. I will also ask questions to my classmates and ask for explanation based on what they know.

Week 8
On this week, Mr. Nick reminded us to complete our CCR and explained further about it. He said that our CCR has to include basically everything that helped us lead to our final project. The research, production an the stages of editing are the most important. Changes are also significant and that it would gain use more marks.

Additionally, he also gave us time in class to complete our self reflection on the bottom of every blog. He made us list all of our blogs on a piece of paper and go through every single one, typing in a self reflection for each. I find this activity very helpful because it allows me to spend my personal free time outside class on editing and other blogs. These are the questions that he recommended us to answer for guidance:
  • How did this help your project?
  • What skills did you develop to complete these tasks?
  • What problems did you encounter?
  • How did you solve these problems?
  • Group: what was your role in this task?
  • How will you do better next time?
Laslty, he instructed us to write our self reflection in a different color than the rest of the texts in this blog.

Week 9

Self-reflection⋆.˚✰

I must admit that I sometimes forget to update this blog weekly. I will try my best to be more organized and update every week so that the summaries of my weeks can be as accurate as possible. Overall, making this blog has helped me a lot. Whenever I need to come back and recall my previous lessons, this blog does the job for me. This blog is especially useful to me to help me remember all of the key terms used in media studies. For example, the types of sounds (non-diegetic and diegetic), different camera angles, etc.
