CCR: Creative Critical Reflection

Here are my answers to the four questions in the CCR through a presentation, voice recordings and a poster.

Self-reflection⋆˙⟡

I stayed up until 2 am finalizing all of my CCR. I am very satisfied with my CCR 1,2 and 4, however I don't really like how my CCR 3 turned out because it was rushed. Completing all of my CCR took more time than anticipated, and I wish I started earlier. However, I'm glad that I finished everything on time in the end.

Overall, despite it being one of the most time consuming tasks, I also think that all of the CCR questions were very fun to answer on different platforms. I enjoyed the process of making presentations and posters, but to be honest I didn't really like writing scripts for my voice recordings. I also didn't like the process of recording my voice itself, because as u can see on the video and voice recording above, there were some background noises and me stuttering in some parts. Next time, I'll try to be more prepared.

Editing

In this blog, as the editor of our group (Maisie) I am going to be documenting step by step my editing process.

Software used⋆.˚⭒⋆.˚

To begin with, I chose capcut to edit our first ever media project because it is one of the most easiest editing software for beginners like me. Although it is surprisingly effortless to use, it still has all of the features you might need for your own personal project, such as tools for cutting, adding effects, text and music, which I love. Another reason why I chose capcut was also because I was already familiar with how it works, hence it saved me a lot of time from learning a completely new editing app.

Colour grading ✩ˊ˗

This was how my clips looked like before adding color to them:

In my opinion, the colors looked very bland and boring, which is something I didn't like, I wanted the colors to stand out more, especially when clips of the sunset come up. That way, the viewers can actually see the mesmerizing view at its full potential.

This is how my clips look like after adding colour (Clear II on Capcut):

Although subtle, I love how the colors look brighter and slightly more saturated. To the nature, it makes it look more eye catching because the effect brings out the color within them. As for the people in the clip above, it made them (me, kris and the tourists) look livelier. With our skin looking brighter, it looks like we are less pale, and this gives off an impression that we are energetic teenagers having a good time at the beach together.

Intensity

This picture shows that I lowered down the intensity of the effect to 69 from 100. This was because putting it at 100 made everything look overly saturated, which didn't look very pleasing to me. This is how it looked like before I lowered the intensity down:

Everyone's skin tone looks overly orange and bright, and this did not look natural at all, which I didn't like.

Audio── ⟡˙ ̟

Main song

Our main song made an entrance by being split into parts like in the picture above in the beginning of our video. This is because I wanted to include some clips in between the bedroom scene, followed by rhetorical questions. If you take a look at my final video, it would make sense.

In the picture above, we can see that all three parts were faded in, meaning that they all started off in a slightly lower volume then gradually increases. In these three parts, they all have different volumes, starting from low, medium to full, building up as the video continues. This is what Mr. Nick suggested me to do.

Our main song was extracted from a video recording I took from Spotify.

Sound effects

#1

There are around 4 scenes like this, and my original idea was to add a typewriter sound effect, like when typing on a keyboard. At first, I thought it was a good idea until I asked Mr. Nick to review my on going edit. He told me that it didn't match the vibes our group was going for.

The typing sounds made it sound old fashioned, like when older people typed on a type writer back in the day, while our ad shows teenagers living in the modern generation. I realized his point was true and started thinking on which sound effects would suit it better, or if I even should be adding one.

Mr. Nick then suggested me to add little bits from our main music instead, creating the loud-silence effect when the clips take turns playing back and forth.

#2

Another sound effect I added was during the scene where Kris picked up her ringing phone.

In this scene, I added an extracted audio of Michelle saying, "Yo, U wanna go out tonight?". First of all, we chose this specific line instead of something like "Hey, let's go out" because we feel like teenagers mostly talk with each other with informal language. It would sound unusual for two best friends to talk so formally with each other.

Second, I added a voice changer called "Vinyl" that made Michelle's voice sound slightly robot-y. I did this to literally make it sound like she's on the other side of the phone call, to make the phone call sound more real.

#3

The last sound effects that I added was when every scene that relates to taking pictures comes up. In our tourism ad, we have two:

The scene where all four girls were taking a selfie at Slushy Society.

The scene where all four girls were taking pictures in the photo booth.

Why
The reasons why I added these sound effects was to make the situation seem more lively and real. Just like when you take pictures from cameras or your phone in real life, you would usually hear sounds like "snap!" or "click!" when your phone isn't on silent mode.

The sound effect I used was generated straight from Capcut, called "camera shutter".

Transitionsᶻ 𝗓 𐰁✰
In this section, I will be explaining the important transitions that I added and the meaning I was trying to convey with them

#1

In this video, it shows that I used the transition "page turning" to show the change in locations. The reason why I chose this transition was because I wanted to convey a deeper meaning to the audience, which was they were about to discover a new story. Just like when we read books, every page tells different stories, right?

Hence, I chose this transition to connote to the audience that they were about to unravel more things about Bali in a different location, and all they had to do was the turn the page to discover more.

#2

In this video, it shows that I used a transition called "circle" to show the change in locations. The reason why I chose this transition was because I liked how it makes it look like the audience is looking at the video through a microscope.

As well all know, most microscopes' lenses are circular, and they are used to see important details. I wanted to imply that the "Slushy Society" sign was important and that the audience should look at how bright and vibrant the sign looks. I also wanted to connote that the location has moved from Playroom to Slushy Society, hence the use of the "circular" transition that almost looks like a microscope lense supports the fact that the change in location is crucial to be realized by the audience.

#3

In this video, I used a transition called "dots right" to show the change in locations. The reason why I chose this transition was because it fits the yellow lights on the big "Love Anchor" sign. By doing this, I was trying to hint to the audience that the next location would have something to do with bright yellow lights,

As you can see in my video, Love Anchor is filled with bright yellow lights all over, especially their big bright sign. So, using the "dots right" transition as an opening to the Love Anchor scenes, it acts like some kind of teaser to the yellow lights.

#4

This is the last major transition that I used to show the change in locations. This time, I used a transition called "blink". It's pretty self explanatory. It shows that the camera acts as if it's from the viewers' point of view. When it blinks, it shows that the location has changed.

I chose this specific transition because I wanted to convey a deeper meaning. The meaning that I wanted to express to the audience was that when you're having a lot of fun in Bali, a single blink can get you so far. There's a belief where people say, "Time flies when you're having fun". That is the kind of message I tried to put out to the audience. Even when you feel like you've only blinked once, you'll lose track of time due to the overflowing excitement you're experiencing.

Animation✧・゚: *✧・゚:*

#1 Text

In this clip, it is shown that the text appeared smoothly using the animation "wobble". I chose this animation because it gives a gentle feeling to it, which matches the soft beat (before the beat gradually increases throughout the video).

Additionally, the background shows the water, which is known for its wobbly movements. This matches the animation used in the text, as if it's resembling the water currents.

Previously + changes made
Before using "wobble" my first option was "typewriter". Like I mentioned somewhere above, Mr. Nick didn't like the idea because it didn't fit the scene on the background.

#1.1 Call to action

In this clip, it is shown that our call to action has different animations used in every word. The first word, "Don't" uses an animation called "zoom in". Its duration is also quick, and there's a reason why. I chose a quick zoom in because I wanted to emphasize on the word itself, which serves as a reminder/warning to the audience to NOT miss their chance.

On top of that, it is also the only word colored in red. The color red means warning and strength, and by using the color red in the word "Don't", it gives off the same effect as the animation I explained above.

For the other two words, "miss" and "out!", I did not add any coloring or animation because I wanted to convey that those two words are weaker than the word "Don't". They are kept simple to show that the dominance belongs to "Don't".

In conclusion, this is how our call to action turned out in the end:

Self-reflection*ੈ✩‧₊˚

I felt so relieved after completing this blog. I know I say this in almost all of my self reflections, but this blog was so tedious and time consuming. To make this blog, I had to finish my editing first so that I can accurately mention and explain everything in detail. Since exporting took a long time, my process on this blog was also delayed.

However, I love how this blog turned out. It looks so neat, and I'm very proud of myself for explaining all of the important details very clearly. Even though it is now currently 3:42 am, I think the effort and hard work was worth it. My back really hurts.

In conclusion, looking at the finished blog makes me happy because I realized how I did all of the editing myself. Reflecting on the process step by step helps me appreciate my work even more. Next time, I will definitely be more organized by adhering to my editing schedule consistently.

Statement of Intent

This is our proposal for our tourism ad. We all worked together on this, however Michelle was mainly in charge of it. Texts shown in red indicates the changes we made.

Tourism Ad

Primary Target Audience

Demographic

  • Young adults (18+) perhaps adults too

We decided to change our target audience age to a post teen age.

  • Both male and female

  • Locals and domestic tourists

  • International tourist from all over the world

Psychographic

  • Nightlife enthusiast

  • Middle class - high class (locals)

  • People that are able to travel internationally

  • Adventure tourists

  • Special interest tourists (seeking new things, cultures, and experience)

Secondary Target Audience

Older people (aged 30+)

Or families with kids.

Some people in this age might still have the interest and enthusiasm to enjoy nightlife.

Families with kids can also be targeted but only through some scenes, excluding the night club and drinks. There are also some activities such as the night market that are family friendly, and can be an interesting experience to enjoy when visiting Bali.

Content Overview

We’re starting the video with a close up switching the context to nightlife in Bali (our main context). There will be a blackout scene, switching to an actor getting ready for bed. Then, there will be a phone call that is asking “yo you wanna go out tonight?” Our background song will be remixed between the scenes.

Okay change of plans… because we think that the phone call scene should be the opening of the ad to make it interesting and we’re thinking of a daydreaming kinda thing.

Starting with a girl in her bedroom just about to sleep, when she gets a random phone call from her friend, asking if she wants to hangout that night. She wouldn't give an answer yet, but she lets out a sigh, and that is where the music starts playing. From that scene, it would cut to a scene of sunset going down with a text “when the sun goes down..” and a sink in cut. The first beat of the music would show different cuts of nightlife in Bali. Starting with teenage girls hanging out at Playroom, Slushy Society, and Love Anchor, G swing, and Shooters.

We decided to start our video with a clip of our main character entering her bedroom instead. After that, we also added some clips in between, throwing in some rhetorical questions for the audience.

We also removed some locations from our list due to several reasons. We took G-swing out of the picture because they were unexpectedly under construction. We also removed Aero x Space, Mexicola and Afterhours because we realized we had too much on our hands for such a short period of time.

Unique Selling Point

We want to show that Bali is not only known for its tropical beach or heavy culture, but we’re also trying to convince people that Bali can also be enjoyable in any time of day, in this case, especially at night.

Representations

People: There will be the girl actor and the friend talking through the phone, and most of these actors are going to be 18+ because it might contain some adult activities such as night club, etc.

Places: night club, g swing, beach

We took night club and G-swing out of the picture due to the changes in audience and complications.

Dominant Reading (Your message)

“When the sun goes down…” is going to be the main text that would appeal to audiences because the whole point of this ad is to show what’s going on in Bali once the sun goes down, at night.

We decided to change this text to "When night falls" because it sounds simpler yet nicer to us.

We decided to make  “Don’t miss out on Bali’s nightlife” our main message because it can apply to different ranges of target audiences.

Self-reflection⋆☆˖

I wasn't in charge of the statement of intent, so I do not have anything to say about the process of creating it. However, I can say something about how its helped our group with our tourism ad project. First of all, I don't know why the table wouldn't paste properly on my blog. I copy pasted this table from Michelle's blog, however when I inserted it on my blog, it just shows a bunch of text. However, I don't really mind how this looks, so it doesn't matter that much to me.

The statement of intent changes constantly, which means that we have to keep updating, and this can help us gain more points as well. Even though our plans kept changing, the statement of intent keeps us on track and reminds us of our whole purpose on creating our tourism ad. It makes us remember our target audience, our message, how we want our final project to end up like, and many more. But I hate having to list all of the changes in our blog because it takes up so much time and sometimes I just forget to do it.

Overall, I find the statement of intent really useful because it serves a number of benefits for our group.

Self-reflection˚ʚ★ɞ˚

When I first made my own filming schedule, I didn't like how it looked on my blog because it went over the edge somehow. Even though Mr. Nick told me it was fine, I still wanted my blog to look nice so I adjusted the measurements of my blog. However, it still went over the edge and so I just gave up.

Then, Kristine made her own filming schedule and she managed to make it fit in her blog. Therefore, I asked if I could copy and paste hers and she said yes. I like how it looks now.

Overall, I find the filming schedule really useful to help me and my teammate stay organized on our filming sessions. Our filming schedule kept us from procrastinating, hence providing us a lot of time to focus on our blog, CCR, and other things after we've finished filming all of the scenes needed. The filming schedule also helped us make sure that we have every props and equipment needed for different scenes to prevent complications on set.

It's a shame that Michelle couldn't attend any of our filming sessions, but it's alright since she didn't have a choice.

Behind The Scenes

In this blog page, I will be inserting images and videos of the behind the scenes of our tourism ad.

Bedroom Scenes ✰ .ᐟ

This picture shows Lamiya (our main camera man) taking specific clips of Kristine (our main actor) in her bedroom. I (Maisie) took the behind the scenes picture with my phone.

This picture shows me (Maisie), helping Kristine (our main actor) demonstrate how we want the scene of her walking in the bedroom to turn out. Lamiya (our main camera man) took the behind the scenes picture with my (Maisie) phone.

Beach Scenes ✶⋆.˚

This picture shows Lamiya (our main camera man) capturing the sunset on the Double Six beach from the place we chose to stay at. She used her camera to take a picture. Kristine (our main model) was the one who took the behind the scenes picture and sent it to me.

This is a picture of Lamiya (our main camera man) capturing the sunset from a little bit closer. Unlike the previous picture, this time she took clips and pictures while standing up together with Kristine (our main actor) and our extra actors. Kristine took the behind the scenes picture with her phone.

Lastly, this is a picture showing Lamiya (our main camera man) capturing the people at the Double Six beach. She meant to show the tourists and locals in the area at that time. She also used her camera for this, and Kristine (our main actor) was the one who took this behind the scenes picture.

Playroom Scenesִ ࣪ 𖤐

This picture shows Lamiya (our main camera man) taking clips of Chelsey (our additional actor) playing darts at playroom as one of our fun activities. Lamiya used her phone this time with the help of her tripod to steady her hands while take clips. It also shows Felysia (our additional actor) in the corner of the picture playing her phone. This behind the scenes picture was taken by me (Maisie) using my phone.

This picture shows Lamiya (our main camera man) taking sample clips of me (Maisie) to test out some camera angles and movements. She also used her phone and tripod to film this time. Kristine (our main actor) used her phone to capture this behind the scenes picture.

Slushy Society ⋆⭒˚。⋆

We don't have many pictures when shooting at Slushy Society because everyone was very occupied. Me and the other girls except Lamiya (she was cameraman) were all actors in this scene and so no one could take behind the scenes pictures. Oscar (Lamiya's friend) was busy doing his own thing so we just forgot to ask for his help.

The picture above is a picture of Fely taking a selfie, showing Lamiya drinking the slushy we bought for the Slushy Society clip and Oscar just playing with this phone.

Shooters ๋࣭⭑

In this picture, it shows all of us, including Lamiya, taking the chance to take actual pictures in the photo booth. While the photo booth scenes were planned to be used in our ad, we took the opportunity to take a group photo together for our own personal reasons.

BTS & bloopers video˖𓍢ִִ໋𓇼⋆

Lastly, I (Maisie) made a compilation video of behind the scenes and blooper clips. I couldn't upload the actual video here because it exceeded 100MB, so I decided to upload it on YouTube and paste the link here. Enjoy:)

Self-reflection⋆📷✮⋆

Overall, I love how this blog turned out. I made sure that I organized the pictures and texts properly so that it fits to my liking.

In conclusion, I think that this blog was the most fun to make. It was hilarious looking back at the failed attempts and behind the scenes images and videos. It shows that we put a lot of effort and determination into this project because of the massive amount of takes we took in order to get a clip that we are satisfied with. All of this was done by everyone while also making sure that we all had fun.
